For food processing enterprises with a daily output of tens of tons, the capacity bottleneck in the freezing stage often emerges where it is least expected—the equipment simply “can’t keep up.” A single spiral freezer typically covers a capacity range of 500–1500 kg/h. When your order volume exceeds this threshold, either extending freezing time or adding multiple single-spiral units brings the dual penalty of rising energy consumption and uncontrollable floor space.
The design logic of the double spiral freezer is purpose-built for continuous high-capacity scenarios above 1000 kg/h. It integrates two independently operating spiral belts within a single insulated enclosure, doubling freezing capacity within a similar footprint while preserving the spiral freezer’s signature advantage of “exchanging height for space”.
The core structure of a double spiral freezer is not complex, but the engineering value of the word “double” far exceeds simple addition.
Double spiral track structure. The equipment houses two independent spiral towers, each equipped with its own drum or helical track. Products enter from the infeed end, complete freezing on two rotary turret, and converge at the outfeed end. This design significantly extends the total travel path within the freezer, making it particularly suitable for products requiring longer freezing times—such as large meat cuts, whole chickens, and thick-cut prepared foods.
Symmetrical annular air duct design. The air duct layout of a double spiral freezer is specifically optimised. Cold air from the evaporator is directed symmetrically and evenly toward the products on each tier of both spiral paths, the air velocity field and temperature field within the freezing zone remain uniform and stable, eliminating freezing inconsistency caused by path differences.
Low-in, low-out for more flexible line integration. A notable operational advantage of the double spiral freezer is its “low-in, low-out” configuration—both the infeed and outfeed are located at the base of the equipment, allowing direct ground-level connection with upstream and downstream processing lines without additional lifting or transfer equipment. For factories with high automation requirements and demand for seamless production line flow, this is a significant engineering convenience.
① Doubled capacity, not doubled footprint. The freezing capacity of a double spiral freezer ranges from 1000 to 5000 kg/h, with the mainstream 1000–3000 kg/h configuration being the “sweet spot” for medium-to-large food plants. Taking a 1000 kg/h double spiral model as an example, its enclosure dimensions are approximately 10 × 4.6 × 3.0 m, with a footprint of about 46 m². To achieve the same capacity with two 500 kg/h single spiral units, the combined footprint including spacing would typically exceed this figure.
② Better suited for “hard-to-freeze” products. For products requiring longer freezing times—such as large meat cuts, whole chickens, thick-cut prepared foods, and large-format seafood—single spiral equipment often has to sacrifice capacity to achieve sufficient residence time. The dual-path design of a double spiral provides a longer freezing path without reducing capacity, enabling the equipment to satisfy both “high output” and “complete freezing” simultaneously.
③ Scale advantage in operating energy consumption. Although the total installed power of a double spiral is higher than a single spiral, from the perspective of “energy consumption per unit of output,” the double spiral is often more economical. The reason: the energy consumption of infrastructure—insulated enclosure, air curtain system, control system—is spread over a larger output. Furthermore, the thermal efficiency of a double spiral operating at full load is higher than that of multiple single spirals operating separately.

A double spiral freezer is not suitable for every production scenario. Its value is most pronounced under the following conditions:
Scenario | Why a Double Spiral Fits |
|---|---|
Order volume stably above 1000 kg/h | Single spiral capacity insufficient; multiple units are complex to manage and space-intensive |
Freezing time requires 30+ minutes | Double paths extend travel distance, maintaining adequate residence time at high capacity |
Sufficient ceiling height (≥4.5 m) | Double spiral towers are taller, requiring adequate clearance |
Desire for low-in, low-out line layout | Double spiral naturally supports low-in, low-out for ground-level integration |
Unsuitable scenarios: Small production lines with capacity requirements below 500 kg/h; sites with ceiling heights below 4 m; and applications involving only small particulate products such as peas or corn kernels—those are better suited for fluidised IQF freezers.
The concept of a “standard product” barely exists for double spiral freezers. Each unit requires targeted design based on product type, capacity requirements, workshop conditions, and production line integration.
Customisation Dimension | Available Options |
|---|---|
Capacity | Full range 500–5000 kg/h |
Infeed/outfeed direction | Same-side / Opposite-side / L-shaped |
Cleaning method | Manual /CIP automatic cleaning (optional) |
Defrost method | Water / Hot gas / ADF automatic |
If your capacity requirement has exceeded 1000 kg/h, or you are planning a new production line with a daily output of tens of tons, the double spiral freezer is an option worth serious evaluation.
